The biggest leadership lesson I’ve learned is the importance of tending to myself and gathering resources for support outside of my organization and stakeholders. The best thing I can do for myself as a leader is build a network of people with no vested interest in what I do—those who can offer unbiased perspectives, genuine encouragement, and the strength I need.

When we are responsible for others and our decisions impact many, we must know ourselves and invest in both our personal and professional development. Being honest about the need for professional support is essential. Your employees, stakeholders, and even family members have a vested financial interest in your decisions. Seeking validation from them, even if well-meaning, can hinder your ability to make the tough calls required of a leader.

A therapist, business coach, or mentor is not directly impacted financially by the decisions you make as a CEO. They provide a safe space for you to work on inner development and strengthen your personal development without added pressure. This external support enables you to stand on firm footing when it's time to make major decisions for your organization.

Have you created a support network outside of your organization? Who are the people outside your immediate circle you turn to for support and guidance?
