Megan Ranney

Megan Ranney is an American emergency physician, researcher, and advocate for public health innovation.247 She is currently the Dean of the Yale School of Public Health and C-E.A. Winslow Professor of Public Health, having joined Yale in July 2023.24 Previously, Ranney was the Deputy Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, the Warren Alpert Endowed Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital, and the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.1 She was also the founding Director of the Brown-Lifespan Center for Digital Health.13
Ranney graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in the history of science in 1997.13 After Harvard, she joined the Peace Corps and supported programs in the Ivory Coast.1 Subsequently, she attended the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating with an M.D. and earning Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Society recognition.1 She completed her internship, residency, and chief residency in emergency medicine at Brown University, where she also earned a Master's in Public Health in 2010, focusing on injury prevention.1
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ranney co-founded GetUsPPE, a grassroots organization that collected and distributed personal protective equipment to frontline workers.15 She served as president of the board for GetUsPPE.36 Her efforts included calling for the expansion of N95 mask manufacturing and urging the FDA to relax regulations for faster access to protective clothing for healthcare workers.1 In March 2020, she submitted recommendations to the federal government regarding priorities for the CARES Act, emphasizing health security and public health initiatives.1
Ranney's research focuses on digital health interventions for violence prevention, behavioral health, and COVID-related risk reduction.24 She is also the co-founder and Senior Strategic Advisor for the American Foundation for Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine (AFFIRM) at the Aspen Institute.234 She is a Fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Health Innovators Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.24 Additionally, she serves on the Board of Trustees for the National Opioid Abatement Trust and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine.24
