User interviews = dry, but necessary?

What if user interviews were actually engaging for the people participating? What if the story you told was less about you and your product and more about them and their problems?

I talked to my teammates Nick Schweitzer and Cynthia Sánchez about how they've refined their user research process over time. Here are some of the best takeaways:

📝Always stick to a script. Scripts hold you accountable to your goals and areas of focus. They're also a controlled variable that ensures that results are unbiased and easy to analyze.

💡Ask users to "think out loud" as they navigate your product. This needs to be clear since the beginning, because you won't get their thinking if you just see them clicking around.

🎯Set boundaries so the interview doesn't end up being a report of unrelated bugs. Leave space at the end of the calls for interviewees to ask whatever questions they want.

🛠 Use tools specifically tailored to the interview and user research process. At Slite, we use: Grain to record meetings and get transcripts, Figma for visual notetaking, Dovetail for clustering findings, and of course, Slite for sharing insights.

Some food for thought on upskilling junior hires in remote - it's almost 2x the effort, on both manager and employee sides.🧠

Some tips for mitigating the pain:

  • Limit the number of junior employees to a certain % of your workforce: sounds harsh, but in a remote team, especially a startup, resources are limited. Don't stretch managers too thin.
  • New hires need to join a stable squad, where senior team members have time to onboard and support them
  • Set clear, documented expectations for what the junior employee will achieve in their first month, six months, and year.
  • Provide coaching and/or therapy services, such as Oliva
  • Encourage junior hires to build relationships and community by meeting with colleagues in their region, joining a co-working space, and attending local networking events.
