Melissa Bunni Elian is an accomplished Multimedia Reporter and story-teller with over 12 years of experience in journalism, photography, and video production. As the creative powerhouse behind Melificent Media, she harnesses her passion and expertise to craft compelling narratives and striking visuals for a diverse clientele, which includes corporations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), news media outlets, and cultural institutions. Melissa's focus on pivotal topics such as cultural representation, the African diaspora, social justice, and structural inequality allows her to inform, educate, and inspire a global audience, ultimately bridging gaps and fostering understanding between communities.
With a solid educational foundation, Melissa pursued her Master's degree at the prestigious Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism, where she was instilled with advanced reporting and storytelling techniques. Additionally, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Biology from the University at Albany, equipping her with a unique blend of skills that enrich her reporting capabilities. Whether it's through print, digital media, or visual storytelling, she continually strives to elevate the narrative surrounding the experiences and challenges faced by marginalized groups.
Throughout her career, Melissa has garnered recognition and support from numerous prestigious organizations in the media and journalism sphere including the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting and the International Women's Media Foundation. Her work has been pivotal in raising awareness about critical issues, and she is a proud recipient of several reporting grants from both the Pulitzer Center and the IWMF. In 2020, she was honored to be designated a Fuji Film X Creator, and her talents were further acknowledged during her time as a Photography Resident at National Geographic, where she photo edited over 140 stories for their travel desk and produced the much-anticipated 2022 Year in Travel Photography gallery franchise.
In addition to her residence at National Geographic, Melissa’s career has seen her serving in various prominent roles including as an Associate Photo Editor at National Geographic, Multimedia Editor at NBC News, and as a Freelance Photographer for the New York Daily News. Her contributions as a multimedia artist have also extended to her work as a Freelance Video Producer and Photojournalist at Quick Rabbit Productions, serving as a Research Assistant Intern at The Futuro Media Group, and as a Photojournalist and Videographer at The Journal News. Melissa has also made strides in mentoring future generations of storytellers, having acted as an Emerging Artist Fellow and Teacher's Assistant at the Jacob Burns Film Center.
Melissa's rich portfolio includes exhibitions and features in notable cultural anthologies such as Mfon, Women Photographers of the African Diaspora, and Black Futures, as well as at esteemed venues such as The Brooklyn Museum and The Jerome Avenue Workers Project.
