I used to fear becoming my Mum but as I've got older, I have started to aspire to it. She told me once that to truly understand someone you need to see them in 3 scenarios:

  1. With their mother
  2. With a baby
  3. With a flat tire

She says adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it.

When the days seem longer than they should, I'm trying to keep that authenticity in mind. Authentic leaders are self-actualized individuals who are aware of their strengths, their limitations, and their emotions.  Authenticity helps organizations. Organizations that foster authentic behavior are more likely to have engaged, enthusiastic, motivated employees, and psychologically safe cultures.

Build more authentic leaders and strengthen the culture of your organization. Partner with us to craft a customized learning journey for your people.

What are your non-negotiables? The things you do every day without fail. This is an exercise I like to do in seminars - list your non-negotiables.

Maybe it's things like: brushing your teeth; making your bed; drinking a coffee; hugging your kids; walking the dog.

Whatever they are, as creatures of habit we all have them. Now let me ask a question: What is your non-negotiable around stress management?

Burnout creeps up on you. We are very good at pushing forward and deceiving ourselves that everything is okay. It isn’t until the day you struggle to get out of bed that you realize there were warning signs. By the time you realize, it’s too late.

While having optimism in the face of adversity is admirable, if you deceive yourself for too long, it can be like death by a thousand cuts. Here are some signs to watch for:

Does it feel lonely in your job? Do you feel like you have to cover you back? Do you question your confidence and abilities? Do you know deeply the value you bring? Do you feel like you can’t bring a problem without a solution? Do you never have enough time? Do you have minimal interests outside of work? Do you feel anxious, tension, depression?

If you are not committed to personal development on yourself, then you are leading with ego. When you lead from the heart, you have a clear purpose and understanding of where you are going. When we lead with ego it’s easy to become overwhelmed and overworked.
