I had no idea what this moment would feel like. This isn't something they teach in school. And not something the accelerator programs or advisors share...
10 years after launching my startup, WedBrilliant, it was acquired this week and I closed the deal.
Like much of life, it's bitter and sweet. But I'm elated. And I'm proud.
I conceived of the idea for WedBrilliant and then bootstrapped it to turn it into reality. I drafted the business plan. I sketched out (in some cases, quite literally) every single page and the UX planning and strategy was months of work, often with the best ideas popping up in the middle of the night while nursing our baby. I interviewed and interviewed and interviewed design and development teams until I found the ones that would help me bring it to life. And continue to support it over the years. I leaned heavily on the gratis legal advice and services as well as constant support offered by Matthew Wilmot, without which none of this would have been possible. I joined an accelerator program and confirmed over and over that I, indeed, had no investors and was bootstrapping the whole thing. Startup, party of one. I had no background or formal training in starting a business, creating an e-commerce platform in one of the fastest growing industries in America - weddings & events, or marketing a tech startup. It was a hands-on education that probably taught me more than any business course would have. The hurdles I faced over the years provided valuable lessons about trusting my instincts. And never giving up.
As I worked hard toward the launch of WedBrilliant all those years ago, I jotted a note for myself and it has remained on my desk: "You'll never regret trying." And guess what. I have come away with an experience of a lifetime; countless friends and mentors (Mike Steib, your early encouragement meant so much!) and industry pros that I respect and look up to (thank you!!!); the confirmation that a lack of a computer science or business degree couldn't hold me back; and the realization that pursuing a crazy little idea, turning it into reality and growing it for someone else to then acquire it 10 years later was quite possibly one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Now I get to be here to support and cheer on anyone else with a crazy idea.
Don't doubt yourself. Pursue those dreams. Nurture those crazy ideas.

Did you know that before smartphones ruled our lives, Portlanders had a unique way to check the day’s weather? They simply glanced up at the top of The Standard Plaza building to see what colors the weather beacon was displaying. And guess what? That tradition lives on.
I recently collaborated with KPTV Fox 12 Oregon to explore this fascinating piece of local history by climbing up to the rooftop where the weather beacon still stands tall, pointing us toward sunny skies or impending rain.
It’s a fun reminder of simpler times and a testament to how technology evolves. So next time you’re in downtown Portland, take a moment to look up and see what the forecast is for the day!
