Melvin Butler

Associate Professor at University of Miami

Melvin L. Butler is an Associate Professor of Music specializing in ethnomusicology with a focus on music and religious practices in Haitian, Jamaican, and African American communities.

He has published articles and reviews in respected journals such as Ethnomusicology, Journal of the American Academy of Religion, and Black Music Research Journal.

Butler has received prestigious grants and fellowships including a Fulbright IIE field research grant, a Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, and was a Thurgood Marshall Dissertation Fellow at Dartmouth College.

With an educational background including a Ph.D. in Musicology and Ethnomusicology from New York University, an M.A. in Jazz/Jazz Studies from New York University, and a B.M. in Performance from Berklee College of Music, Butler has a strong academic foundation.

As a saxophonist, he has performed with renowned artists like Betty Carter and Christian McBride, as well as Haitian konpa group Tabou Combo.

His current research focuses on performance, Pentecostal faith, and cultural identity within Haitian, Jamaican, and African American communities.

Melvin L. Butler's specialties include musics of the African Diaspora, Caribbean popular music and identity, gospel music in the United States, performance, nationalism, ethnography, and fieldwork.

He is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Miami, having previously served as an Assistant Professor at both the University of Chicago and the University of Virginia.
