Merlijn Smits

Merlijn Smits is an individual deeply interested in the impact of digital technologies on user experiences, values, and well-being. With a background in industrial design engineering and philosophy of technology from the University of Twente, Enschede, Merlijn focuses on the mediating effects of technology and advocates for responsible design and technology assessment.

Merlijn pursued his education with a keen eye on technology and philosophy. He completed his VWO in Natuur&techniek at Udens College, followed by a Master of Science in Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society, and a Master of Science in Industrial Design (cum laude) from Universiteit Twente. He also undertook an exchange bachelor's program at Universidade do Minho and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from Universiteit Antwerpen.

In his professional journey, Merlijn held various roles in different organizations. He worked as a consultant at PBLQ and served as a Workshop leader, Presenter in Ethics & Innovation, and Freelance graphic designer at Smits&Beltman. Additionally, he gained experience as a Design Manager, Ph.D. focusing on digital well-being, and engaged in a Graduation project on design for well-being at Radboudumc's REshape Center for Innovation. Merlijn also contributed as a Student Assistant in Industrial Design Engineering at Universiteit Twente and worked on a Graduation project on Human Centric Lighting at Philips Lighting.
