Mette Lykke is a Danish businesswoman and entrepreneur, best known as the CEO of Too Good To Go, a company dedicated to reducing food waste by connecting consumers with surplus food from local businesses. Water is critical for our Earth’s ecosystem, and we’re running out of it: About two billion people don't have access to safe drinking water today (SDG Report, 2022), and around half of the world's population is suffering from severe water scarcity for at least part of the year (IPCC). Sadly, that trend is expected to increase, exacerbated by climate change and population growth (WMO).
That’s why not wasting water is imperative. And saving food from being wasted is also saving water from being unnecessarily used.
On this World Water Day, at Too Good To Go, we decided to shine a light on the amount of freshwater that can be saved by avoiding unnecessary use if we fight food waste together.
Food has a real value; not just economically, but also in terms of the vital resources it requires to produce. Every meal saved by the Too Good To Go community is equivalent to avoiding the unnecessary use of 810 litres of water, which means that since our launch in 2016 we’ve helped to avoid 243 billion litres of unnecessary water use! 🤯💦. That’s enough water to fill 100,000 Olympic size swimming pools.*
Together, we can protect our valuable resources and truly help tackle climate change, bite by bite, one meal at a time. 💪🌎

Today, we publish our annual #ImpactReport for 2023, and we are delighted with the results. We welcomed 21 million new registered users and 72,000 new business partners to our global marketplace, across 17 countries and 2 continents. 🤯📈
Together in 2023, we saved 121,686,720 meals from going to waste. The broader climate impact of this milestone is incredible, avoiding the unnecessary use of nearly 100 billion litres of water, and preventing 328,554 tonnes of CO2e emissions entering the Earth’s atmosphere. 🌎
