Mhoyra Fraser

Associate Professor

Associate Professor Mhoyra Fraser is an experienced fetal neuroendocrinologist and physiologist with expertise in fetal brain injury at the University of Auckland.1 Originally from Scotland, she received her PhD on the development of the fetal hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis under Prof Mont Liggins at the Postgraduate School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, National Women's Hospital.1

Currently, she heads the Perinatal Neuroscience Molecular Laboratory in the Department of Physiology at the University of Auckland.13 Her research focuses on addressing issues associated with preterm birth and its effects on child health outcomes.1 She uses clinically relevant whole animal models to study fetal neurophysiological, neuroinflammatory, and neuroendocrine responses to adverse events during gestation.1

Fraser's current research goals include:

  1. Investigating potential therapeutic strategies to prevent or ameliorate white matter injury and neuronal loss in the preterm brain
  2. Improving understanding of infection/inflammation- and asphyxia/hypoxia-ischemia-related damage mechanisms
  3. Identifying clinically relevant biomarkers of preterm brain injury1

In 2019, she was awarded the Faculty Research Development Fund (FRDF) Project Grant for her work on the role of extracellular vesicles in communication, specifically focusing on using exosomes to ameliorate preterm brain injury.2

Fraser's academic credentials include BSc, DipSci, MPhil, and PhD degrees.3 She has been an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland since August 2015.3
