Mia Shaw

Mia Shaw is a learning scientist, STEAM educator, and artist currently serving as a Provost Postdoctoral Fellow at New York University's (NYU) Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She earned her PhD in Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 2023, under the mentorship of Dr. Yasmin Kafai. Her academic background also includes an MEd in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and a BA in Human Biology with a focus on Adolescent Development from Stanford University.123

Mia’s research focuses on designing justice-oriented STEAM learning environments that engage Black and Brown youth, particularly through creative and interdisciplinary technologies. Her work integrates Black Feminist and Womanist theories to explore identity authorship, community building, and speculative design practices. She has contributed to projects involving electronic textiles, computational thinking, and critical storytelling in computing education.124

In addition to her academic pursuits, Mia is an illustrator and comic artist who uses her art to make educational research more accessible. She has also been involved in teaching middle school science and coordinating STEM programs for underserved communities.12
