My mother is 74. She worked for 26 years for an Omaha, NE based subsidiary of a large Japanese food company until last year, when the subsidiary was bought out by a large U.S. food company.
52 years ago, after graduating university in Japan she first moved to the U.S as a young, aspiring banker. Eventually, she became a General Manager, Director and Vice President of the Omaha, NE based company. She also pursued her life-long passion for studying and at age 69, got her MBA. She also continues to run and do yoga, and even a couple of years ago competed in rock-climbing against her 9 year old grandson – and won.
I have never seen my mom not try hard – in any domain. “Coasting” seems not to be in her blood – even today.
On International Women’s Day, running around juggling all kinds of things all day I couldn’t help but smile, thinking about the blessing and curse of not wanting to be half baked about anything. I thought about all of the women I know who go that extra mile in everything they do -- even if those efforts are not always institutionally recognised.

Wiring up a school: can you imagine remote learning without an internet connection?
My nanny and I have spent our “free” time for 4 years rebuilding and improving her alma mater, Anecito Panolino Elementary School, located in a remote part of the Philippines and damaged by Typhoon Haiyan. We have built classrooms, a library, playground, bathroom facilities, and a potable water facility; with the support of jewelry maker WoonHung we regularly send recycled books and stationary. Recently, our students have taken top prizes in district math and sporting competitions.
Then the pandemic hit — and a slow mobile internet connection was all we had at school and in the children’s homes.
Last month, we finally installed a satellite antenna and wired up the classrooms. There is a lot of exciting debate happening as we think about the endless possibilities this opens up for not only the teachers and 325 students, but for the community as a whole.
Both in my job working for a tech company and in my volunteer work, I get to witness the transformative impact of technology first hand. Seeing the serious and smiling faces of children as they learn keeps me focused on the mission at the heart of technological innovation, and to think creatively about its power to improve and enrich lives.
