Today I am very happy to celebrate six (6) months with Volition Veterinary and I wanted to share some reflections on my transition from a hybrid role (3-2) to a fully remote position.
In my previous role, as the Vice President of Communications & Customer Service, I was managing six different teams across various functions. It was a dynamic and challenging experience that allowed me to grow and learn in countless ways and for which I will be forever grateful.
Transitioning to a 100% remote role has been a significant change and I can state that it is NOT for the “faint of heart.” That being said, and because “sharing is caring,” I wanted to share some of the challenges I've faced and how I'm navigating them:

Communication: In a remote setting, communication needs to be more intentional, and this is coming from the former Vice President of Communications. I've been leveraging digital tools to ensure clear and consistent communication with my team and colleagues.

Building Relationships: Without the casual interactions that come with a physical office, in the break rooms or even the hallways, building relationships takes a lot more effort. I've been trying to organize virtual team-building activities to foster a strong team culture.

Focus: Managing one department vs six has allowed for a deeper focus, but it also means a shift from a broad to a narrow perspective. I've been learning to balance the depth of focus with the need to stay informed about the broader business context.

Time Management: Working remotely has certainly blurred the lines between work and personal time. It reminds me of the COVID era - BUT I've been setting boundaries to ensure a healthy work-life balance, forcing myself to take breaks outside (walking the dogs and doing my daily “Gratitude Walk”).
I am immensely grateful to work with some wonderful colleagues on my small team and with colleagues from around the globe Volition who have shared similar experiences with me.
