I sent a message to a client yesterday celebrating a recent achievement of theirs and sharing what I appreciate about them.

As I hit send, my instant thought was that I probably sounded like a broken record. They knew all of this, I’d said it all before and I probably should have thought of a different message to send.

But her response to my message was telling:

“What a message! Thank you for taking the time to tell me all of that... I let my eldest listen to your message, so he gets a sense of what his Mum does”

This was a great reminder to me that you can never be too clear with the people around you. And if you think you have communicated something clearly enough, you probably haven’t.

Always err on the side of sharing what you appreciate about the people around you. This includes:

🦸‍♂️ What your colleagues are great at

📈 How the work your team are doing is valuable and the impact that it’s making

🏢 What you value about the business you work for

🌱 How your clients and team are changing and growing

🚀 The potential you can see in the people around you

The conversation you’re having in your head is often different from the one the people around you are having in theirs. And most people don’t realise what makes them unique or the difference that they’re making.

When in doubt, always make sure they know.

(And yes - this post probably applies to your home-life too 🏠)

In 2022, Corey Wastle threw me the task of designing an activity to help the Verse Wealth team to deepen their connection with each other.

What we ended up with was a card game where people paired off, and chose a question to answer from a deck of cards. There were about 30 different questions, and they all invited people to dig deep and open up with a colleague in a way that they hadn’t before. Some of the questions helped people share their story, some tapped into the way they saw the world and themselves, and others allowed people to share their hopes and dreams.

The game was a huge success - the feeling of connection between the Verse team was instantly noticeable and the experience was one of the most powerful of my coaching career.

Since then, I’ve run a version of this game with a dozen other businesses and the participants have all had a similar experience. And they also said almost the the exact same thing afterwards:

[“I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT WE'RE ALL STRUGGLING WITH SUCH SIMILAR THINGS"]

As one of my coaches Jaemin Frazer once said to me “we think our struggles are unique and our gifts are common… but usually it’s the opposite”.

And I reckon the things that you and me are struggling with right now are much more common than we probably realise.

So what’s the point in sharing them with the people around us?

I think when we hold onto these painful parts of ourself tightly and try to hide them from the world, they develop a power over us that makes us feel like something’s wrong with us and slows down our growth.

And while sharing it with others won’t necessarily solve the issue or make it go away, there is a whole lot of comfort in knowing that others can relate and that we’re not broken and we don’t suck. To be human is to experience struggle and that’s something we can all relate to, despite our smiley exteriors.

Opening up and dropping the veneer of perfection requires a leap of faith, but most of the best moments in life start with one of those, right?

So if there’s something in your life that you’re struggling with…

Or if you feel out of your depth in part of your role…

Or if there’s something you did or failed to do recently that you’re feeling ashamed of.

Share it with the person you need to share it with, or someone that you look up to. Deep down, you probably know who this right person is.

At the very least, it will take the sting out of how you’re feeling so you can approach it from a place of owning it, not avoiding it. And more likely, you will find that this person understands what you’re going through, because they are there or have been there themselves.

Their experience and perspective will help upgrade the conversation you’re having in your head so you head in a better direction. You’ll also probably feel closer to that person than ever before.

Our struggles can only thrive in the dark. Sharing them is a catalyst for our growth.
