The Surprising Source Of Stress At Work. Wellbeing at work means being well managed at work. I recently conducted a survey with 2000 people who said they weren’t happy at work. The number one reason was poor management. It causes more distress than not being paid enough or being asked to do too much. Some of the examples of poor management that were cited  are depressingly familiar: things like bullying, micromanaging or just being incompetent. These behaviours should be easy to spot and should be easy to fix, unless they’re embedded in the culture of the company, in which case you’ve got a much bigger problem like the National Fire Service has recently identified.

What’s interesting to me is that 892 people reported poor communication as the most common behaviour of poor managers.  Add to that the managers who talk too much, don’t listen enough and fail to give good feedback or recognition, and you’ve got a clear picture of poor communicators. What’s going on that we keep promoting people to lead teams who don’t seem to have the skills to communicate effectively to the people in those teams?

I think there’s possible two answers:

Firstly we’re asking everyone to be leaders rather than be managers. Way too much effort (and remuneration) is spent on strategy, “What” we should be doing and “Why”,  and not enough focus on execution: How are we going to actually do it? It’s where most of the work happens and it needs to be run well.

Secondly, most companies organise themselves around small teams focused on a particular function. The team leader has often been promoted because they have exceptional technical skills for that function.  But the skills they most need now are all about managing other people to do the work. And where do they learn those?

In a nutshell those key skills are about recruiting the right people, empowering them to solve the issues and providing them with constant constructive feedback to keep them on course.

I know those are also key components to great leadership, but they are the core management skills that any team leader should master to eliminate the #1 reason for stress at work.

If you or anyone in your company would like a booster shot of practical skills to manage their teams then I can help: https://lnkd.in/ex8GNbJf

I often teach creative teams how to come up with new ideas by combining existing concepts in surprising new ways. I love this execution of that principle which has immediate impact, and a clear provocative message. Its by the street artist op.x and is one of many examples of creative thinking in the latest series of artworks from The Gallery, being displayed on billboards across the country. https://thegallery.org.uk #creative #ideas #art
