51% of Life is Anticipation
Heard this from a friend years ago, and it only becomes more true with time. It's not as simple as looking forward to something. I've come to understand that what it really implies is our obligation to create a sense of anticipation in those we care about - our spouse or partner, our children, our friends and our colleagues.
Decades of marriage have taught me much, but near the top of the list is "Just. Keep. Dating." Keep looking for ways to impress and give to your spouse. You'll feel more love, and more anticipation the more you put into planning a date, small or large.
Giving your kids lots of events big (vacations) or small (homemade pizza Friday nights, 1:1 time together) to anticipate, and they will naturally bring that sense of happy anticipation to others.
If you tell your friends you'll call them at a certain time, call. If they can't connect then, leave a voice mail that relays "I can't wait to catch up." I don't always live up to this, but I try, and I'll keep trying more each day.
This became vivid to me as I was planning a quarterly trip to Krakow, Poland to meet with our amazing Dev team... thirty of the smartest, most creative and accomplished people I've seen in my career. I wanted them at the end of this trip to look forward to our next quarterly planning. Before I left, I got some Kansas City-related shirts to give as a silly, but heartfelt gesture of appreciation and to recognize outstanding accomplishments. Simple gesture, could have fallen flat, but the feedback was it was a great part of our meetings, appreciated by all. A good number told me they were looking forward to our next meeting.
It's not simply about gifts or recognition. It can also be about goal setting, and how those goals are framed. Instead of saying "we're going to build a great platform," say "we are all building something that's never been done, that thousands of people will use daily, and we want those people to say "why can't all platforms be that good?"
If you feel or believe that 51% of life is anticipation, the question is - now that you know this, what will you do to create that anticipation, that simple joy in others?
Try this frame of mind at work, with your spouse or partner, with your kids and friends. Use this frame of mind in a relationship that's hit a difficult spot.
But if you do hold this frame of mind at work and follow through on it, I can almost guarantee you'll appreciate your colleagues more, you'll like your work more, and you'll have a greater sense of joyful anticipation about what comes next.
What are you saying to your shareholders if your annual meeting does not have an option to attend virtually?
Doesn't matter. What matters is what your shareholders PERCEIVE that you're saying, and it's quite possible that some are going to hear: "we're not concerned about making this convenient for you" or worse, that "you're not welcome."
After 2+ years of all of us attending hundreds of virtual conversations, it's safe to assume that a virtual option to attend an in-person annual shareholder meeting is now expected, particularly for any shareholder who is immuno-compromised or more than 50 miles from headquarters. Or anyone who is very busy. Or frankly any shareholder.
A virtual meeting option is a digital red carpet and welcome mat, and a chance to communicate that you care both about your shareholders' health, and their convenience.
