Highlights
Through these past few days, like in disaster situations, we see the better parts of our humanity come out. Compassion, offers of help and support, increased sense of community within our passion industry. I see it on Linkedin, or in ad hoc communication channels established for support, and even the old-fashioned way of getting together in person and talking and sharing. Before we here within the Microsoft Games world got hit, it was Riot, it was Discord and Twitch, it was Unity. Going further back into last year, Epic, EA, etc... Hard to think this is the end of this era of layoffs within our industry, either. I have friends who were let go last year that are still looking, friends I hadn't checked in on in a while, being consumed with all that is going on in my world. But they checked in on me when this hit.
When layoffs are industry-wide, it is very challenging for people to find new jobs, as they are disappearing faster than being created. So, in this upcoming August, in November, in January of 2025, when people are still trying to find a position, I implore everyone to retain this sense of compassion and support, not just while this loss and emotion is fresh, but when you've already settled into whatever new normal that life will take you. Check in on them. Offer what help you can to assist in their job search. But also offer your support to them as a people. Getting back on your feet is NOT only just finding work/income. We are more than our jobs, our careers, but I can speak as a long time Blizzard employee: this company IS a part of my identity. For many who lost their jobs a couple days ago, a part of their identity was taken from them. People need to heal, and we should help them how we can.
I'm not one for posting on Linkedin or anywhere else tbh, but events like this are an exception. So, to all my friends and colleagues who received harsh news, of course I'm here for a reference, a letter of recommendation, sending a job posting I see, or whatever else I can do to help. There are currently too many good people, talented people out there without gainful employment, so at the very least, let's all lend a hand to help get these folks back on their feet, not just now, but as time marches on. We are our best versions of ourselves when we help others, so be that better person.
No, I'm not leaving. I'll probably never leave, so I'm going to take this opportunity to post my own Orc Statue selfie. I'm honored to be taking on the role of Blizzard's first Business Information Security Officer, starting today. I look forward to continuing my now 16 year mission of protecting Blizzard's people and properties in a new and more expansive way, collaborating internally at Blizzard along with our partners at ABK and beyond to fight the good fight.
