Michael Carroll

Director of Computational Informatics and Visualization at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago

Michael Carroll is a dedicated researcher focused on using computational methods to analyze large physiological datasets in clinical settings, particularly in pediatric autonomic and respiratory disorders like familial dysautonomia, CCHS, ROHHAD, Rett syndrome, and other pediatric issues.

With a diverse background encompassing basic science, clinical knowledge, and mathematical expertise, Michael has a broad skill set that extends to traditional statistics, machine learning, network theory, and dynamical system simulation to better understand the physiological phenotype and underlying mechanisms of pediatric disorders.

Michael Carroll's primary goal is to enhance patient care through his research efforts. He is passionate about merging clinical physiology with modern computational techniques to create advanced analytics and visualization tools for physicians in specialties like sleep medicine, neurophysiology, critical care, and autonomic medicine.

Educationally, Michael holds a Master of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language from Temple University, Japan; a Ph.D. in Computational Neuroscience from the University of Chicago; and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences from The Evergreen State College.

Professionally, Michael Carroll serves as the Director of the Computational Informatics and Visualization Laboratory at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. He has previously held roles as a Research Scientist at the same hospital, as well as post-doctoral positions at the University of Chicago and the Seattle Children's Research Institute. Additionally, he has experience as a Graduate Researcher at the University of Chicago and as a Student Research Assistant at Portland State University.
