You can learn valuable things at dev conferences.

At Kube Con a few years back, a few colleagues and I were looking for a spot to stand and enjoy beers. We ended up squatting at an abandoned vendor booth.

After about 10 minutes, a devops engineer marched up and started telling us what terrible vaporware the product was and how disappointed he was that his CTO bought it. I explained to him we weren't with the vendor, just camping out at the empty booth. He left in a huff.

Yeah, it was the CrowdStrike booth.

Just performed a 20 minute demo on "how AI works" for a third grade class.

Was pretty happy with the results. Sharing here in case others want to use / adapt this!

  1. Asked the class what AI stands for and what they think it means. Explained that it's trying to get computers to interact and create... and maybe one day actually "think" (?)... like humans.

  2. Opened up an LLM (in this case ChatGPT) and prompted it "Pretend you are a third-grader. Write a short poem about" and let the class choose the topic.

Goal: Give the class a touchstone to how the technology works.

  1. Asked all the kids to write one word to finish the sentence "The elephant is ____" on a piece of paper. Then tallied the results on a whiteboard bar chart style. Then, I fed in the prompt "Pretend you are a third grader. Finish this sentence in one word: The elephant is" and compared the results.

Goal: Teach them that the primary objective of an LLM is to predict what they expect based on the prompt.

  1. Asked the kids to take what they now know about how an LLM "predicts" and work together in their small groups to guess what it would say to this prompt: "Pretend you are a third grader. Finish this sentence in three words: The elephant is"

Goal: Encourage the kids to think more about prediction and 'fitting' a response by guessing what a third grader might say.

  1. Showed them how an image generator (in this case Stable Diffusion) works by using the prompt "draw a school" and created 9 images. [Output is the left image.]

  2. A few days before the class, I had asked the teacher to have all the students spend 5-10 min drawing a picture of their school. I took all the drawings, photographed them, and fine-tuned Stable Diffusion on the images. I showed a collage of the images to the students, and then used the new model with the prompt "draw a school". Then asked the students to compare things it got right from their drawings. [Output is the right image.]

What was really cool about the results from the trained model is that it picked up how a lot of the kids put suns, clouds, and bushes in their pencil sketches. The students also pointed out how it matched their style of drawing the school windows. In one image, it even included the two colors, blue and yellow, present in a student's partial coloring of the sky in their sketch.

Goal: Give them a little more insight into what it means to train an AI on data.

And that was it! Anybody else out there try doing a primary school-level intro like this?

Would love to know what you tried and compare notes!
