Highlights
Writing for Fortune, Michael del Castillo outlines innovative strategies Goldman Sachs' Head of Global Sports Finance, Stacy Sonnenberg, utilizes to successfully finance new, and upgrade existing, #sportsstadiums across the globe.
For example, after running into a legal obstacle to generate fresh liquidity and help finance FC Barcelona's sizable $1.6b Camp Nou stadium renovation, Sonnenberg discovered an obscure Spanish rule that allowed the club to securitize the stadium's future ancillary revenue streams and sell them (via a stadium financing trust) as securities into the secondary markets.
More specifically, the securities are tied to the rights, titles, and interests of future ticket, food, and beverage sales at Camp Nou. Those who purchased the securities will receive annual interest and principal payments over 23 years, paid out in 5 tranches.
Investors consist of 20 private placement companies, including several notable insurance companies, who purchased 1.5 billion euros worth of the securities.
Closer to home, Sonnenberg and her GS Sports Finance team recently concluded a $750m financing round to help build a new stadium for the National Football League (NFL)'s Tennessee Titans. She also is working with French #Ligue1 club #Lyon, while marketing similar stadium securitization finance models to prospective clients in the US, UK, EU, etc.
Any type of asset with a stable cash flow can be grouped together, securitized, and sold to investors. In sports, expect to see more assets tied to clubs/teams, leagues, and players securitized in the future.
