Highlights
Some lasting thoughts from an epic week with the Greatest Generation...
Our daughters clinched a championship this weekend, and in their victory, they imparted essential life lessons. Each of the two had a refreshing way to demonstrate the power of aggressiveness, joy, and presence. The way they play basketball is a way to life life.
First and foremost, heartfelt congratulations to them. They worked hard – mentally and physically – to win their league basketball championship. Violet shone on offense, while Everly stood strong on defense. Their performances were a delight to behold.
Numerous individuals remarked on the girls' fearless aggression on the court. Despite being among the shortest players, they never allowed their stature, the intensity of the game, or any chaotic situations to deter them. They rose to the occasion. They charged headfirst into action, blocking shots, stealing the ball, diving for possession, and driving forcefully up the court. There were moments throughout the season, particularly in the finals, where they teetered on the edge of fouling out. Every game, every moment was electric. They were all in.
Amidst the grind, there was an abundance of smiles and playful camaraderie. Before, during, and after games, they engaged in lighthearted banter, exchanged high-fives, extended helping hands, and offered encouragement to their opponents. Yet, amidst this camaraderie, they never wavered in their fierce determination to win. Their approach exemplified a spirited sportsmanship that transcends mere competition. Nothing was personal in pursuit of victory, but their grace in defeat and victory displayed a joyful sportsmanship.
They seamlessly transitioned from moments of laughter to flashes of intensity and back again, embodying the ethos that success is most fulfilling when accompanied by grace and respect, whether on the court or in the arena of politics or business. And that we can take our jobs seriously whilst enjoying ourselves in the process.
Lastly, they were totally present. Only during highs would they break from focus and look to the stands and see us cheering on. All if life revolved around their mission before them.
The coaches, exemplars of civic leadership, imparted skills beyond my capabilities as a parent. While their coaching undoubtedly played a crucial role in guiding the girls to the finals, it was ultimately their character that shone through, making every moment worthwhile. Congratulations, ladies!
