Earlier I was listening to the latest Freakonimics episode - "Is Google Getting Worse". Short answer; of course it is, most people have been saying it for years. But that's not what made the episode interesting ...

What made it fascinating, is that Stephen Dubner spends 40 minutes walking in circles around the core issue, talking about all the symptoms of it, without managing managing to point to the precise thing that has made Google Search so bad in the recent years.

A key sentence comes at the very start of the episode; Dubner: "... when you needed some information, you just typed a few words into the search box and very quickly you got the answer your were looking for, usually from an authoritative source ..."

Later on in the episode, Dubner complains that Google Search is not as good as it used to be when to researching things.

What is fascinating, is that either from cognitive dissonance, or out of fear, he is unable to connect the two assertions and point to where the problem is - the problem of "authoritative sources".

I would argue that the "authoritative sources" is precisely what made Google Search (along with most social networks) far worse than they used to be.

These days, Google no longer serves you content that is most relevant, or most interesting, it serves you content that has been pre-approved. This makes it a much more "safe" search engine, but it also makes a worse one.

It's difficult to even call Google Search a search engine anymore, when regardless of the topic, the same few hundred websites keep coming up. Websites which will never question the narrative, which will never stray from the pre-approved talking points of government press releases.

Damn I miss the Wild West internet of early 2000s.
