In response to a Facebook post this morning of a physician stating they are no longer the frontline of this battle, "you are", I felt compelled to respond with the following:

I would consider this statement at least misguided. Yes, the "frontline" of healthcare should not be the last line of defense, but it has long been recognized that healthcare needs to do far more in the way of proactive effort to help people learn how to be more healthy thus better able to meet health challenges head on.

For example in the old days hospital administrators used to say (and some still do) "It is not my job to keep people out of the hospital, it is to take care of them when they are here". We used to debate that attitude from within, but evolution gradually brought us to change that perspective. Hospitals have often become health systems with a more integrated approach but there is still a long ways to go in this regard. The healthcare industry needs to be far more proactive in not only guiding people how to be healthier but in how to treat ailments themselves proactively. Some organizations have realized this concept, including payors, but realistically some of the downside is that healthcare is a profit center, thus dramatically reducing costs can also dramatically reduce profits.

So, while there are further paradigm shifts needing to occur, the current primary concern of COVID that this statement is referring to should also have a different approach. The "frontline" should be helping keep people healthy in the first place. Some of the nurses here recently pointed this out (inadvertently?) during their demonstrations.

And our Governor Bryan just brought up the same concept in his public statement this week - "we can also help by being healthier ourselves". Point is, how can they do that? Walking more is not the answer.
