Michael's academic journey has laid a solid foundation for his remarkable career. He began by pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSc.Eng EE) at the University of New Brunswick, followed by a Master of Engineering in Systems and Computer Engineering (M.Eng) at Carleton University. His research included studies at Dalhousie University and spanned diverse fields such as psycho-acoustics and the human auditory system. Michael’s commitment to academic excellence is exemplified by his near-completion of a PhD in biomedical engineering, where his profound understanding of sound and human perception has been a critical asset in his professional projects.
In terms of contributions to the industry, Michael founded and co-chaired the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium's (IMTC) VoIP Forum, significantly expanding its influence from a small group of companies to a robust consortium comprising over 60 members. He has also contributed his expertise to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as co-chair for the development of the next-generation audio codec, Opus.
