Michael MacHarg

Solving for Climate + Equity

Michael MacHarg is an accomplished professional currently serving as a FUSE Executive Fellow with the City of Durham, North Carolina, focusing on reducing transportation emissions and working towards a carbon neutral city by 2040.

In addition to his role at Durham, Michael is a Senior Fellow at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, where he contributes to advancing research and student engagement in impact investing, climate finance, and social innovation.

Prior to his current roles, Michael led the Social Ventures team at Mercy Corps, where he established a prominent impact investment fund operating in sectors like climate, fintech, agriculture, and logistics across sub-Saharan Africa, SE Asia, and LATAM.

Michael also co-founded Simpa Energy in India, a pioneering solar finance company that electrified thousands of rural households, impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands by providing renewable electricity. The successful venture was eventually acquired by ENGIE.

Throughout his career, Michael has been involved in a wide range of business innovations in agriculture, financial services, renewable energy, clean water, nutrition, and global health, showcasing his diverse expertise and commitment to social impact.

With a background in social science, Michael was part of the founding team of the nonprofit pharmaceutical company OneWorld Health and contributed to the Social Development Department of the World Bank early in his career, demonstrating his dedication to making a difference.

An active advisor, mentor, and judge in various incubators, accelerators, and competitions, Michael is highly engaged in nurturing and promoting organizations that strive for significant social impact through their endeavors.
