Highlights
At Adobe MAX, the AEM team has released our latest innovation: Edge Delivery Services. I could not be more excited. Edge Delivery Services completely reimagines how we build web experiences and the business outcome we can expect from these experiences. Here is my engineering-skewed perspective why this is so cool: First, Edge Delivery Services without compromise embraces the Web Platform. To develop an experience using Edge Delivery Services one only needs to know web standards like HTML, CSS, JS and the DOM. No proprietary server-side languages. No proprietary client-side frameworks. Just the web platform. Why are we doing this? Well, the web platform has come a long way and dramatically improved over the last decade. There is simply no need to add frameworks on top. Second, Edge Delivery Services is laser focused on Speed. In our collaboration on Edge Delivery Services with many customers we found three super important dimensions of speed: Our team has become obsessed with page performance. Out of the box, an experience developed with Edge Delivery Services comes with a mobile Lighthouse score of 100 and green Core Web Vitals. As a developer you don’t need to craft your way up to 100 – your project starts at that level. Working with our customers and partners we found amazing business impacts when an experience has such blazing fast performance. It greatly affects the traffic (SEO, bounce rate), engagement and the conversion. Personally, when we started on this journey, I expected an impact of page performance to business outcome. But in practice, I was quite blown away by the magnitude of the impact we observed. Project velocity is another angle we are focused on. By embracing the Web Platform developers who had never seen Edge Delivery Services could be productive in a day or two. It also helped that we fully embrace tools that developers already know like GitHub. There is no proprietary tool chain to learn and understand. Finally, we removed complexities like bundlers that are simply not needed in modern web development anymore. Less is more (and it is faster). As a result, the many projects we ran with customers and partners took weeks, not months. Third item on speed is our Content First approach. Content practitioners produce content before any line of code has been written. Code and content are completely decoupled and are worked upon in parallel without dependencies onto each other. In Edge Delivery Services there is no notion of a content schema that needs to be defined upfront. Practitioners just start typing in tools they already know (Word, Excel, or Google docs). No setup or training required. There is so much more innovation around Edge Delivery Services that we currently work on with customers. This is just day 1 of an exciting journey. So much more to come.
