I am in Abu Dhabi this week participating in the WTO Business Forum and the WEF TradeTech meetings, on the margins of the WTO MC13 Ministerial meeting.
As the WTO struggles to conclude broad-based multilateral trade liberalization, countries have been turning to smaller-scale Free Trade Agreements. There are now some 400 such "Regional Trade Agreements" in-force around the world. But not all "Trade Deals" are created equal. And not all countries pursue the same strategies in signing them.
To bring insight to this complex situation, BCG has created the Trade Engagement Index. The Index combines trade flow data from UN Comtrade with comparative analysis of trade agreement design from the DESTA project at the World Trade Institute. It provides a synthesized view of Trade Engagement at the country or trade bloc level. This new tool will help companies navigate the FTA environment as they seek market access and build global value chains, and will help countries and trade blocs as they optimize their trade and investment strategy formulation.
