Michael Shattock

Professor of Cellular Cardiology at King's College London

Michael Shattock is a prominent Professor of Cellular Cardiology at King's College London, where he has been a faculty member since 2004. He leads the Cardiac Physiology Research Group within the School of Cardiovascular Medicine and Sciences. His research primarily focuses on the regulation and function of ion translocating proteins in cardiac muscle, particularly how these proteins contribute to heart health and disease, including conditions like cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, ischemia/reperfusion injury, arrhythmias, and hypertension.134

Shattock's work has significantly advanced the understanding of ion transport mechanisms in the heart. A notable contribution from his lab is the identification of phospholemman (PLM) as a key regulator of the cardiac Na/K ATPase. His ongoing research aims to explore how changes in ion fluxes affect cellular dysfunction and contribute to various cardiac pathologies. Recently, he has also investigated the role of cardiac autonomic input on electrophysiology, leading to insights into 'autonomic conflict' as a potential factor in lethal arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death.45

In terms of academic credentials, Shattock graduated with a BSc in Comparative Physiology from the University of London in 1979. His extensive publication record includes over 67 articles, with significant citations reflecting his influence in the field.23 For further information or inquiries, he can be contacted at his email address: [email protected].uk.1
