Michael Jones

Composer

Michael Sydney Jones is a composer and musician with a background rooted in classical music and Afro/Cuban phrasing.

He began composing in Grade 10 and had his works premiered by various orchestras, including the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Michael studied composition at the Tasmanian Conservatorium and later privately with Paul Patterson at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

He conducted the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for a recording of his piece 'Fanfare' in preparation for his studies in London.

Michael's compositions, like 'Sun Cycles,' have received recognition, with some being permanently placed in prestigious institutions like the Royal Academy Library.

Upon his return to Tasmania, he established Contempo Music Publications to promote works by local and international composers.

Michael has secured commissions from Arts Tasmania, the British Arts Council, and IHOS Opera, focusing on blending Afro/Cuban phrasing with Classical Music structures.

His teaching career spanned from being a peripatetic composition and instrumental teacher to serving as Department Head at St. Virgil's College.

In addition to teaching, Michael has extensive experience as a trombonist, playing with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and being a founding member of The Tasmanian Trombone Quartet.

He has also performed in big bands and cabaret settings, showcasing his versatility as a musician.

Educationally, Michael studied at Elizabeth College Hobart Tasmania and pursued a B.Mus in Composition, Trombone, and Teaching at the University of Tasmania.

Throughout his career, Michael has been associated with various organizations and institutions, such as Wizard Moon Music, Northern Territory Music School, and the University of Tasmania, among others.
