The hebrew month of Elul is being heralded this Shabbos in Shuls all over. This reminds us that the 5784 is coming to a close with a new year waiting in the wings. 📆

What are your feelings around this? Does this transition period fill you with excitement about your next steps in defining the person you are destined to become? ...or are feelings of inadequacy, frustration and self judgment coming up for you. ⚖

Some people just want to go to sleep and wake up after Yom Kippur to avoid the self work that is necessary. 😴

Some people are eager to work but have been burned in the past by unrealized dreams and unfulfilled promises. 😣

But one thing is for sure....no matter what has been the case in the past, it really has no bearing on the future 😇

I hate the word "cheating"

...well at least in terms of diet

I was inspired to write this by yesterday's post Chaim Moshe Steinmetz, LISW about the word "vulnerable" (I'll share the link in the comments - it touched off a great discussion).

To me cheating has such a nefarious association.

People cheat on taxes or in business to gain unentitled wealth Married people cheat on their spouses and hope to not have to deal honestly with an unfulfilled relationship Students cheat on tests and assignments to gain an unfair advantage over their peers

The common denominator is that its about enjoying something that one is not entitled to.

When someone is looking to live fitter or lose weight and they have a specific regimen to follow, it's really a personal choice whether they follow through with it or not. The results they get will depend ONLY on what they do, not on what anyone else thinks about it.

So it's really a misnomer to use the word cheat here.

Which leads to the second, and more damaging thing:

If you look at a veering from your plan as "cheating" what does that mean about you? How do you feel about people who are cheaters and how does that make you think about yourself deep down?

Instead I want to challenge you to reframe the "cheating".

If you set an intention and didn't follow through - "I didn't follow through this time, but I can do better next time" "I shouldn't have had that cake but at least I got to enjoy it as a treat. Next time I won't need it" "I didn't follow my diet 100% today but 80% is still pretty good. Overall I am still making progress towards my goal"

What does cheating mean to you? #Reframing #Success #ItsNotCheatingItsTreating
