Highlights
It’s official, North America now has a unified standard charging plug for EVs (it’ll just take a couple more years to implement on various vehicle production lines). Stellantis has announced adoption of Tesla’s NACS standard. They were the last major holdout to do so.
Curiously, there is no mention of Stellantis vehicles (Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Jeep, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Maserati) having access to Tesla’s charging network beyond the handful of universal “Magic Dock” locations that are open to everyone. That would leave them as the only major automaker who hasn’t secured access to Tesla’s network. Other manufacturers were more than happy to let their customers know their NACS connector also gave them access to over 12,000 Tesla Supercharger locations. We’ll have to wait and see which way Stellantis goes on this.
It seems Stellantis may be adopting NACS to align with their partners BMW, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes and Honda who together are all working on a nationwide fast charging network called IONNA, aimed to rival (and supplement) Tesla’s network. Those manufacturers have previously announced the switch the NACS (and access to Tesla’s network) leaving Stellantis as the odd duck.
We’ll see if Stellantis follows this announcement with access to Tesla’s network, and the roughly extra chargers that would bring.
