Small talk feels like torture.

I've heard this again and again, and I've felt this way myself before.

If this is you, I’ve got something that might just change conversations for you.

It’s a little secret I learned from psychologist Carole Robin, Ph.D. called the 15% Rule.

Here’s how it works: by sharing just 15% more about yourself than you normally would, you can open the door to deeper, more meaningful conversations. By sharing something a teeny bit vulnerable (you don't need to disclose your UTI or share the play-by-play of your argument with your partner last night I promise 😆 ) it encourages others to open up too.

For example, instead of just saying thanks after a compliment about my talk, I might share how nervous I was about the event and how I practiced until 2 AM.

This kind of honesty invites others to share more too, transforming awkward small talk into genuine conversation!

Want to master this the next time you find yourself stuck in small talk? Check out my latest video for a full breakdown on making this rule work for you!

Let me know in the comments if you've struggled with small talk. It's way more common than you might think!

Love and coffee, Mick

This will be the most vulnerable post I’ll ever share on LinkedIn…

…but in the 8 years I’ve been sharing stories, I’ve always promised to share the highs and lows.

Last Thursday, I lost our last little embryo.

I’ve been floating through the days like a ghost ever since.

Here’s a message for my little love lost.

“Our last sweet little embryo, perfect in every way.

I felt you nestling into me, the space I saved just for you for the next nine months.

I wish I could say I know it’s not my fault, but every bone in my body aches with guilt knowing that you left so soon.

I was your mom, but I couldn’t keep you safe enough. That haunts me.

I hope one day, I feel less grief and find peace in knowing that we both were together for the time we were meant to be.

I love you, I miss you, I wish you were still here.

Sleep tight.”

In the midst of this, I’ve had to continue working.

I’m not alone, so many women like me have had to carry on their workday while their heart is shattered from loss.

We wipe our tears before and after zoom calls.

We send emails that feel so insignificant when our world has fallen apart.

We count down the moments during the day until it’s okay to fall apart again.

Women experience this around the world every single day, and yet the corporate world has no room for sharing these profoundly human experiences.

We have to start making space for conversations around infertility, pregnancy loss and grief in the workplace.

I hope my story helps even one person out there feel less alone.

❤️ if you support this!

I love you guys, thanks for letting me share a piece of my heart with you today.

Love and coffee, Michaela
