I enjoyed listening to this short audiobook. It was very easy to listen to thanks to Ruth Golding who did a fantastic job reading it.

Some of my takeaways:

• the most complex and the most beautiful machine we will ever have a chance to study and to improve is our own body

• many people are quick to blame their environment for their misfortunes - they want cigarettes that won't put themselves into their mouths, money that won't leave their wallets, and legs that will carry them to the gym or library instead of the bar; first, we should understand the role of our own flaws that shape our circumstances

• we are always in control; the brain is a servant, an instrument exterior to the force of our ego (our will); and the brain (the ability to focus and the ability to retain the information) can be trained just like we can train our muscles

• whenever people speak, they speak twice: their words express their thoughts, and their tone of voice expresses their mental attitude

• a person who is constantly kind is a person whose mind is constantly filled with kind thoughts

• we experience friction in our lives: when people misunderstand or annoy us, when things don't go the way we want; yet we ourselves are responsible for most of this friction, which is caused by our stubborn and rigid mental attitude; people who are open minded, flexible, curious, who constantly continue learning about themselves and the world and approach life with humility, experience far less friction and far more joy and happiness in their lives

• speak less, observe and learn more, regulate your emotions, replace the bad habits with the good ones, and see the impact this will bring on the quality of your life

This is a great book on #work #ethics, full of #common #sense #wisdom on how to build a successful #career and life. It's written in a plain and simple language so the #audiobook is easy to listen to.

Some takeaways:

• before you become rich in wealth, first become rich in character; pursue honesty, integrity, discipline, patience, kindness, personal development

• people who are too good at making excuses are often good at nothing else

• show me how you spend your free time and I will tell you who you'll become: put every spare minute into self development; if your circumstances force you to wait for 10 minutes every day, try to educate or improve yourself during that time - this adds up to 60 hours a year, so what if you find 1 or 2 hours a day?

• most people won't dare to steal cash from their employer, yet many are doing same in a form of laziness, sloppiness, or extending their lunch breaks, which damages not only the employer but also their own personal growth and reputation; lies can be told or acted, and acted lies are often worse; always give your honest best

• don't underestimate the value of small acts of discipline of everyday life: good personal hygiene, keeping your house clean, taking a good care of own appearance, being punctual; all of these fill us with self-respect and confidence

• people who are orderly and disciplined in their personal lives are more likely to show the same level of discipline in their work, to pay more attention to details, and to finish what they start

• there are 2 types of people in life: 1. warm, kind, polite people who radiate energy and make others feel empowered, energised and excited; and 2. cold, inconsiderate, selfish people who use fear and force to dominate social interactions; the first type of people will always do better in life, attract more customers, business partners, and inevitably attract more success and happiness

• think of luck as accidents with positive outcome; accidents can happen only when there's activity, when we do something; you will never have luck while just waiting, doing nothing

• job where you learn and grow (even if you earn less) is much more valuable in the long run; don't get too focused on salary, instead pursue growth (focus on who you will become)

• do not smoke, it's proven that nicotine deteriorates intellect, mental resilience, stamina, and significantly reduces your chances of building a successful life

• what we think we become; fill your mind with positivity and self-respect, carry with you a vision of you being strong, healthy and successful (the more specific, the more likely it is to become your reality)
