Three funds later, with the bliss of retroactive perspective breaking through the fog of busyness, I look back at what we accomplished with immense pride. We built our team, strategy, systems and reputation from scratch, with Monk's Hill Ventures now a tier 1 VC in the region. We got the vote of confidence of top global LPs and our cap table mirrors the best funds in the world. We worked with some of the most inspiring entrepreneurs and teams, helping build hugely impactful companies, some of which employ tens of thousands of people. 40+ companies that are bringing access to healthcare, education, financial markets, insurance, basic goods, business tools, sustainability, information, etc. to their customers, often for the first time.
I packed my bags again this summer, bidding farewell to Asia and to MHV, with a heart full of emotion and of colourful memories. Being handed a termsheet to negotiate my second day on the job - baptism by fire, they call it! Speaking at Thai demo days that felt more like massive rock concerts than tech events. Flying to Manila for a board meeting the day after my wedding while my husband honeymooned with his dad. Taking calls from a confinement hotel room for 2 weeks with a crawling baby at my feet. Eating street food in Saigon on tiny plastic stools between visits to yet another tech outsourcing center. Too many anecdotes to relay. Also too many people to thank! So I will simply thank my partners: Peng T. Ong and Kuo-Yi Lim (林国毅), of course. Justin Nguyen, my favorite work twin and buddy. Susli Lie, originally one of the first founders I worked with. I have learned a ton from each of you individually and have been blessed to work with you.
And with each chapter that closes a new one that opens!
I have now moved back to Europe as a family of four, setting up our home base in the beautiful city of Barcelona. I am excited to be back in this part of the world, close to family and old friends, where the languages I speak are not completely useless and where nature is familiarly Mediterranean. Tomorrow is back-to-school day for me as I start a new job at Personio. I am stoked to go back to operating full-time, alongside an outstanding team that I have gotten to know and deeply respect over the past few months. This should be fun!
I first got to Indonesia in February 2009; Jakarta was my introduction to Asia. Having grown up in a country of 5m people, I was blown away by the scale of things. On my way out of the airport, face glued against the taxi window, I watched motorcycles rush by, crowds and activity like I had never seen before. The mobile operator we worked for had tens of millions of customers that we were connecting to the grid for the first time. It gave me a first taste of the scale of impact one could have here. When I flew out of CGK a few months later I knew I would be back.
I moved back to Asia in the summer of 2016. I had met Peng T. Ong at a Blue Bottle cafe in the Mission district of San Francisco, and later on Kuo-Yi Lim (林国毅) over kopi in Singapore. They were starting a VC fund and somehow asked this foreigner with no investing experience (me!) to join them. We talked about durian, the metro system, psychology, Peng’s library, the singularity, tech companies around the world. The first of many conversations to come. I sensed at the time that the region was at a tipping point and the tech ecosystem was just starting to take shape. I was hoping we could play a role in shaping it.
Fast forward to today; as I close this chapter of my life and career, I look back at the experience of a lifetime and couldn’t be more grateful. The past 7 years have been more formative than I could’ve possibly anticipated. As terrifying, fun and exhilarating as a rollercoaster ride! To say that it was tough would be an understatement. Working with companies through highs and lows and more lows and higher highs. Shifting business models repeatedly, going through the pandemic across multiple companies and geos, cracking GTM strategies after bumping our heads against the wall, hiring stellar people, going through painful reorgs, successfully exiting companies, closing down markets, going on fundraising roadshows, delaying IPOs, building teams, dealing with angry customers, landing partnerships, etc.
