Marlo Thomas gave me my first job out of grad school. Well, more specifically, I was asked by her niece to help film and launch a website. My parents affectionately refer to this time as "MarloCam." This meant that I also spent a very very very small bit of time in the same orbit as Phil Donahue; we did not interact much.
Just a few months before, Donahue filled in as our graduation speaker at our NYU Doc screening after our invited speaker couldn't come. My mom found Phil to say hello and share that she had actually been on The Phil Donahue Show as a Nader Raider. They were both almost late to my film screening because of that conversation. ;)
I like to think that was Phil's talent, really, to connect people together who were, prior to that moment, in unknown distant orbits. Kind of like when Marlo went on Phil's show in 1977 and met him for the first time. I'm 75% sure that I had to digitize that love at first sight meeting from a VHS tape.
I'm thinking of his family and those he inspired. And here's to our orbits.
Make stuff. Make the stuff that sits for a while in a notebook and a Google Doc until you're given the time and space to do it. Make stuff with your dad's vintage lenses. Make stuff that you know should work. Make stuff with friends that allow you to record in their studio or will be your fishing companion while you stumble around or who will read your script to see if it makes sense. Make stuff.
"Diary of a Brooke Trout," my short experimental film made in the Wood River Valley, will its premiere here too at the Sun Valley Film Festival. It combines fishing and journalism and mental health. It comes straight out of a journal and straight out of personal conversations. And I'm incredibly honored and excited that it gets to be played in front of a "hometown" crowd.
