I enjoyed my recent back-and-forth with John Cochrane, "The Grumpy Economist," just out from Stanford Business Insights.

"The Fed alone cannot stop all inflation. The Fed is a lot less powerful than people think. .... I also fear that the next crisis will be like the last one, but bigger. In the next crisis, the government will want to borrow and print maybe $10 trillion to bail out the financial system again, keep businesses and people afloat, and maybe finance a war. But since everyone saw how things turned out last time, we’ll get a big inflation fast. Or a debt crisis, or a default. It can happen, even in the U.S. Then the U.S. can’t borrow enough to meet the needs of the crisis, a genuine catastrophe."

Remember your first road trip? My son, Rudy, and his buddy Calin are driving back to their respective colleges on the East Coast in Rudy's first car, still dusty from the smoke of the epic Park Fire in California.

Rudy's summer job was cut short by the fire -- with the nonprofit Sierra Institute thinning dangerously overgrown forests near the Dixie Fire burn scar in the Sierras. But he's proud to have received his chain-saw and wilderness first-aid certification. It's never too soon to send any environmental studies jobs/internship leads for next summer my way.
