With all of these political texts, calls and emails over the last couple of months... 😅

I just want to salute all of my clients and prospects over the last 10+ years. I get it. I appreciate you.

And also, if you haven't heard from me in a while... don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you. 😉

"Baby Buffetts" - Probably not original, but I'll claim it.

Plenty of headlines around PE deal activity, as it's decreased in each of the last three years, most precipitously here in 2024... hopefully is going to pick up in 2025? 🤞

*I did no research, I've just talk to people. Through conversations across the small business landscape: operators, bankers, investors, lawyers, accountants...

Big funds aren't the only ones ready for opportunity.

  1. It's well known, that Baby Boomers are aging out of their careers as entrepreneur's and business owners.
  2. There is a MASSIVE segment of these small business owners, that weren't "big enough" to cash out early and exit to a "traditional" fund. So they've continued working towards "normal" retirement age.
  3. The compete on Valuation vs. Interest rates have dampened these owners ability to sell and held buyers back. This has created pressure on Baby Boomers, perhaps holding on a bit longer than they anticipated... That'll eventually cave, regardless of rates, regardless of valuations.

All that being said, I think there are a TON of small managers, Millennial business owners and investors that have been frugal since the start of 2020.

Call them "Baby Buffetts"... prepared to deploy capital and grow through acquisition. A gobbling up of "unsexy businesses". A consolidating of small, yet strong local brands.

What else? These investors aren't restricted to traditional deal terms - they can be creative and flexible - without the burden of competing on a benchmark or pressure from LP's.

There is a massive opportunity for these Baby Buffetts to improve the operations of these strong and profitable "Mom & Pops"....

Marketing / lead routing / online bill pay / CRM's

None of them will make headlines.

My take: The Baby Buffetts have a collective war chest that's going to create a quiet frenzy in the next 12-36 months.

I'm excited for Baby Boomers to finally be able to retire and receive their nest eggs and be grandma and grandpas full time.

I'm also excited for the Baby Buffetts to drive the next evolution of local economies.

(ps. PitchBook expanded it's research scope to specifically include private, non backed businesses 🤫 )
