A quick story: I showed 10 C-Level execs an image diffusion model. I told them: “Ask for anything. ANYTHING. You’re literally limited only by your imagination.” Awkward silence; It was clear these gentlemen (tragically, all middle-aged dudes) hadn’t had to imagine much of anything in years. Finally, one of them cracked and asked for “a sunset”. This… uninspired… prompt resulted in an equally uninspired picture of a blasé sunset.
His Chief of Staff, a woman roughly 20 years his junior, bursts into the circle, asking if she can give it a whirl. “I wanna see potato chips vs pretzels in a fight. Chips get squirt guns. Pretzels get nun-chucks. Whole thing’s on Mars.”
The resulting image was a modern masterpiece. A digital Donatello. A pixelated Picasso. So much so that the circle of skeptical execs was now literally clapping with delight. The height of irony: Sunset Guy says, and I quote, "I do believe this technology has the power to change our business for the better."
But honestly? They should have been applauding her. The curious, courageous, clever woman who had the moxie to conjure such a thing.
In a coming age where we’re increasingly limited only by our imagination, a dearth of imagination figures to become our limiting reagent.
