Highlights
[Midweek Mentoring] This week I’m aiming at my peers and colleagues in IT and Information Security leadership - Let’s reframe the narrative and our approach at hiring Cybersecurity talent!
As I read this fantastic article this week, I found myself nodding along and reflecting on countless conversations I’ve had with Pathrise fellows and Cyversity mentees over the last 12 months. https://lnkd.in/efJmKDty
There isn’t a demand problem - there are hundreds of open roles for InfoSec practitioners, and there isn’t a supply problem - many many people WANT to get into a cybersecurity career. The decision processes and systems connecting the two are failing right now… but I genuinely believe we can change that.
Some of my practical tips to cut through: FOR HIRING MANAGERS: - Take the time to really discuss the need and role with your HR or Recruiting partners. Avoid the “easy button” of unmodified ChatGPT Job Descriptions or automatically slapping on a degree or certification requirement for roles. - Think about and interview for the behaviors, thought patterns, and attitudes that will be successful in your team. Not the specific tools or key technical terms on a given resume. - Integrate learning, development, and training into your hiring strategy and even consider reallocating a portion of your labor budget for a given role from salary to “guaranteed funding” for L&D.
FOR APPLICANTS: - Keep trying and don’t be discouraged! Way easier said than done, but we need your support in the industry. - Read between the lines of job descriptions and communicate between the lines in your interviews. Practice telling stories that can make the connection between seemingly unrelated scenarios and experiences. For example, the stay-at-home parent that managed the uncertainty, chaos, and variability of toddlers will be unfazed by the dynamic nature of security incident response. The meteorologist who studied models, identified patterns and made informed predictions is well suited for threat hunting and intelligence. The paralegal who distilled mountains of dry legalese into concise briefs is well suited to evaluating and assessing vendors and contracts as part of Vendor Risk Management.
“The sooner the industry recognizes how artificial many of the most common barriers to entry are, the sooner security organizations can realize that the so-called "labor shortage" is a lie — one that's been told for far too long.”
I’d love to hear reactions and strategies from those in my network, especially Brad Rager, Olivia Rose, @devon bryan, Jerich Beason, James Warren, Gina Yacone, Neel Sata, Joe Nocera, Joey R., and many more.

[Midweek Mentoring] Prioritize learning and personal development. Something every day or at least every week.
We all have the same 24 hours in a day, and those don't take time to "sharpen the ax" will never keep up with those who do.
