Highlights
As I kid, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer because my dad was a personal injury lawyer here in Detroit.
My dad just made the law look fun. I remember us picking up donuts on the way to his office on Saturday mornings. He'd let me play with the copiers and empty the hole punches.
He'd take me to the courthouse and introduce me to everyone. I remember how he was just as nice to the cleaning crews and valet guys as he was to the judges and lawyers.
I learned a lot about how to treat people from my dad.
After going to college in Arizona, I returned home to Detroit for law school. My goal was to open a firm with my dad, who had been a solo practitioner for over 20 years. My working title for our firm was Morse & Morse.
My dad's goal was for me to join a big firm to learn from “real” lawyers, and then we could work together.
But during my first year of law school, I got a phone call from my mom. My father had had a heart attack. He didn't make it.
My dad died at 49. I was 22.
I did join a big personal injury firm in Detroit after law school, as my dad wanted. And I started the Mike Morse Law Firm only after I got fired on 9/21/1995—my dad's heavenly birthday.
My dad was my best friend. I still miss him every day and wish we had the chance to open Morse & Morse. And I'm still grateful for what he taught me about the love of the law and how to treat people.
I talked to a law firm owner last week whose story felt familiar— because his story is also my story.
This lawyer is interested in joining Fireproof Performance and told me about how he started his own firm several years into his career. He wanted a place to do great work for clients and practice his craft as a trial lawyer.
He's a great trial lawyer and has had some success. The firm has gotten some 7- and 8-figure verdicts and is generating millions in revenue. The founding partner's reputation has grown. The firm's caseload has grown. The team has grown.
Now, he's hit a ceiling. The firm can't grow any more in its current form, and the founder knows exactly what his problem is—
He is.
He is running the business while also managing a full caseload that includes trying a handful of cases every year. He knows that he can't keep doing both at a high level.
He also knows what he wants—to be free to try cases without worrying about the business. Finally, he knows that in order to do that, he needs to hire somebody—a COO or an integrator—to run the business. He need to delegate and elevate.
During our conversation, he asked me how to find that COO and how to afford that person's salary.
I told him to put whatever amount of time, money, and energy into the search that is necessary to find the right person. Because if he finds that right COO, they will repay their salary 100x over.
This firm owner agreed. He sees what needs to happen to grow the firm he wants to run for the next 5, 10, 20 years.
I believe he's almost ready to do what he needs to do to unlock growth and reach his full potential.
But he's not quite ready. He's not ready to let go of control. He's not ready to trust somebody else with his baby, the firm he started.
I get it. I was that law firm owner for years, until I was finally ready—not to hire a COO, but to change myself.
Because once he's ready to let go of control and commit to working the Fireproof Performance program, I have no doubt that: • his firm's growth will go nuts; • he'll be a happier lawyer; and • he'll be a better lawyer than he's ever been.
I believe that will happen for him because I've lived the story myself with the Mike Morse Law Firm and have seen dozens of other firm owners experience the same thing after working with our team (pictured here on a team trip).
If this story resonates with you and you're ready to build the firm of your dreams, dm me with "Fireproof". I'm happy to jump on the phone and hear your story.
They say that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. I think that's true.
And I'm looking forward to talking to that lawyer again when he's ready.
