If you’ve messaged me via email, Slack, or LinkedIn, I’ve probably been slow to respond or I haven’t responded. It’s not you, it’s me.
I’m grateful for the time off. And for the time to reflect.
One phrase I’ve reflected on is “carpe diem.” Many are familiar with the translation of “seize the day,” an exhortation to make use of the day, to strive, to achieve, and to accomplish. In Dead Poets Society, the 1989 film, you might remember Robin Williams encouraging his students with this phrase and the accompanying line, “Make your lives extraordinary.”
But the original meaning of the phrase, as used by the Roman poet Horace, is something different. Instead of seize the day, a better translation might be “pluck” the day. A ripe fruit should be plucked and enjoyed. A day should be plucked and enjoyed, as the ripeness of this moment may soon pass.
Life itself is a singular experience. Our world contains a bounty of goodness. I hope you allow yourself to immerse in the beauty of this marble floating in the sky.
There is a time to strive and a time to enjoy the fruit of one’s labor. Excess in either is an imbalanced approach to life.
Thanks for your patience while I enjoy a season of rest. I hope my colleagues, clients, and partners are also able to find time and take part in the abundant harvest available in life.
