With help from some incredible folks, I've been working on something this summer.

More tomorrow.

I rebuilt a referrals program; it grew referrals 550% and added seven figures in annual revenue.

Referrals secretly help you explore new verticals (and yes, you also acquire new customers at lower cost).

Let’s explore how:

  1. A referral promo can be the best offer for referrals, referrers, and the company.

Members should never debate between sharing a public promo code or their unique referral link.

Referrals can be the least expensive paid acquisition source, so they can exceed your best paid promo and offer a member incentive.

Incentivized members confidently share the best deal, get rewarded, and grow your userbase with a lower CAC.

But remember Andrew Chen's advice: right-size the referral offer/incentive or you’ll get low quality referrals keen on a deal.

  1. Help members feel confident talking about your product.

If you're not knowledgeable about a topic, will you bring it up often?

Make it easier for members. Curate a bundle of resources for them to reference:

a. What they learned b. How the service works c. How the person they’re talking to can use it d. And how that person can explore it further

Members will talk to their families, friends, doctors (B2B wink wink), colleagues, and others about their experience.

Help your members feel prepared for these conversations. Then, help the people they spoke with take the next steps.

This flywheel lives beyond the app.

Your service may be deeply woven in your members' lives. If they can't comfortably answer questions about your product, they won't bring it up.

Indirectly, this prep will help you explore new verticals, such as a spouses/households program and/or a B2B expansion.

  1. Referrals User Research.

An NPS score measures the likelihood someone will recommend you. Now you’re talking to members who actually did.

You’ll learn how members really think/talk about your service, the reasons they don't refer, who referrals/referrers think is an ideal fit for your service, and if/how they use the service together socially.

Talk to three groups: a. Members Who Never Referred  b. Members Who Referred c. Referred Members

Find out about:

  1. How folks describe the ideal person for your product
  2. Their referral pitch (including failed ones)
  3. The pitch that convinced the referrals to buy
  4. Friction areas in the referral/sign-up experience.

Then, explore how they share their product experience with each other. Friends/family who use the product together could be a whole new persona.

Help folks who already refer do more of it better. Then, address the barriers stopping those who haven't yet.

You’ll grow overall referrals: # of referring members and # of referrals per member

And you'll get a stronger understanding of how your service works within the lives of your members.

That's language you can repurpose across your content/sales funnel and new use-cases to test.
