Highlights
In 5 years, we've scaled Parker to $20M in ARR with a 2-person growth team. But last month we started the process of hiring a Director of Marketing. And to be honest... it's been difficult.
TL;DR; we are looking for a marketing wizard who:
- Understands the nuances of being an e-commerce founder
- Blends B2C creativity with B2B strategy
- Has great taste and an eye for aesthetic
The problem is that most candidates I've talked to over the past few weeks propose the same outdated B2B playbook. "Let's do case studies, partnerships and ABM!"
Sure, all of that stuff has its place.
But e-commerce founders are a different breed.
We need someone who can blend that consumer-style marketing (think viral TikToks and engaging online courses) with the sophistication of B2B (data-driven, high-touch when it matters).
They also need great taste.
Because in e-commerce, it's hard to stand out without a strong brand.
Finding this hybrid marketing unicorn has been... challenging.
Either they get the tactics but lack the domain knowledge, or vice versa.
I know there is incredible talent out there, but it's been tough finding them.
Any advice for me, LinkedIn? Know someone who might be a good fit?
If so, send them my way — I'd love to chat 🙏
P.S. We're hoping to talk to talent from relevant Shopify apps, consumer brands, trad fi, courses, and agencies.
For 3 years, I was Parker's CTO, Head of CX and Head of Legal & Compliance.
Why?
Like most first-time founders, I thought I was being "scrappy" and "efficient."
But the truth is, I was scared.
-
Scared of the price tag that came with top-tier recruiting firms.
-
Scared of "wasting" money on a hire that might not work out.
-
Scared of letting go of control.
I know now that my fear was likely costing us millions in unrealized growth because I was the bottleneck keeping us from scaling to the next level.
The turning point came when we finally bit the bullet and hired a CTO.
I was hesitant. But within months, it was clear that this was the best decision we'd ever made.
Our new CTO Nicholas Kucharski didn't just do his job well. He brought in a network of other A-players.
Suddenly, we had a "flywheel effect" of talent attraction that helped us fill multiple subsequent roles to unlock even more growth.
THE TAKEAWAY
This experience taught me that by trying to save pennies on recruiting, I was leaving dollars on the table in terms of company growth. That's why, over the past few months, we've invested heavily in recruting.
Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it's scary.
But the ROI? Absolutely worth it.
If you're still DIY-ing your recruiting for critical roles, ask yourself: Is your thriftiness actually enabling growth?
Remember, your company's potential is directly tied to the caliber of people you bring on board.
Don't let fear of spending hold you back from making the investments that truly move the needle.
