Welcome to the team!
We all have built-in denial systems that get activated by insecurities, anxiety, and fear. These defense mechanisms show up when we are faced with facts that are too uncomfortable to accept, and therefore, we reject them despite overwhelming evidence. Although sometimes well-intended, these protectors come at a cost to us and our relationships. When we don't acknowledge reality, we neglect certain parts of ourselves. What eating poorly and never exercising does to our physical health, avoiding difficult emotions, hard truths, and historic adversity becomes detrimental to our emotional health, compounding unhealthy behaviors. It can feel scary to lean into the unspoken parts of our stories. Still, when we create an empathic space to explore and embrace the whole of who we are—even the unsteady and broken parts —we begin to manage our lives in a more authentic, connected, and sustainable way.
