July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month. When I was two, after a week in the hospital, I was diagnosed with Polyarticular Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Growing up with a disability - especially one that most people don’t recognize as a disability - was hard, confusing, and painful. It’s been a lifelong journey of highs and very low lows.
I’m always open to talking about it to raise awareness of what systemic arthritis really is and how it impacts the kids and adults that live with it. If I were to give advice to my younger self, I would say “it’s definitely not going to be easy. Eat well. Take REAL care of yourself. Stand up for yourself, especially with doctors. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need - especially at work. And volunteer. Because you’ll meet the best humans who know exactly how you feel, and you’re going to need that.”
Thankful for the people I’ve met and all of the ways the Arthritis Foundation has been part of my life since day 1. If I can’t do life without Arthritis, I’m glad to have done it with them.
