Earlier this year, I started my first semester at Pratt Institute on an icy 14dF day. Before I knew it, the trees are flowering, the semester is over, and my students are graduating! It has been such a pleasure to teach, work with, and learn with these students from a variety of design backgrounds. I remember three weeks before the semester began, I perused >10 suggested design books to figure out which chapters I should include as readings in my syllabus, pondered how to diversify the perspectives I would present, and anxiously crafted assignments for this brand new #UX course I would teach. I didn’t have to worry, as I quickly found a strong community of professors at Pratt who shared resources, ideas, and techniques - Michael Kelly Christine O'Dell Anthony Conta Hasan Hachem and many more whom I met at Pratt’s Center for Teaching and Learning.
Here are 3 areas I hope to iterate on: ⚙ #Ethics: I incorporated a module and introspective discussion on being an ethical designer, wrestling with the question “What is it to “be good” vs “be good at design”?” This was inspired by my fellowship last year at FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) where I explored this question in-depth when I traveled to Germany and Poland to examine technological advances during the Nazi era. I must admit, it was very tough integrating this discussion in an undergraduate class. For my students, it was their first time facing such questions. We struggled with facilitation, context-setting, uncertain stances, unexplainable gut feelings. But I see this as an opportunity and imperative to build scaffolds so that essential conversations such as these are had and made accessible. ⚙ Course-based #CivicEngagement: Michael Kelly led a thought-provoking professional development workshop that propeled me to consider how students could further connect with the local Clinton Hill / Fort Greene communities around Pratt through a UX project. How might the assignments change? How might my teaching adapt? How might we sustain course<>community partnerships? ⚙ #GenerativeAI: The buzzword of the year! I’ve been figuring out how Gen AI could optimize my creativity and workflows, while simultaneously navigating beta Gen AI features in design, research and writing tools. Although I encouraged my students to explore Gen AI critically where they could, I’m still working out how best to guide and track progress in this area. I welcome any ideas and suggestions!
