Happy 4th of July I was born in Virginia, USA by Norwegian immigrant parents. That made me a US citizen. In 1991, I was granted dual citizenship (US, Norwegian). Over the years, I have had mixed feelings about being American - sometimes I carried my birthright with pride, other times I (over-)emphazised the Norwegian side of me. For different reasons, I have never voted before at a US election. This year, I strongly feel that my vote matters, and I am now registrered to vote. I don’t care if Biden is old. I will vote for him in any form or shape. It’s not just about American democracy and freedom, it is much larger than that #nevertrump #neverProject2025

A tale of a Real Hero’s Journey

Three years ago, a boy crept along the walls in the long corridors at the International School of Bergen, doing his best trying to avoid attracting any kind of attention to himself. Eye contact was difficult, he was socially insecure, had low self-confidence and even the fact that he was talented in science was something he was very doubtful about. Meanwhile, three girls in his class had observed him for some time and agreed that they wanted to get to know him. One day they asked him if he wanted to have lunch with them. He had never been asked such a question before, so he almost shouted out: 'No!' as he ran away from them. One of these girls, all of whom could well be characterized as Pippi Longstocking, turned to the other two and said, 'He's going to be our friend, whether he wants it or not!'. It is true to say, that these three Pippa girls have been instrumental in the development of this boy, Andreas, and the transitional journey he has made, accompanied with a fantastic teaching staff at the ISB and in the frame of the Middle Year IB education system.

Fast forward three years... the young man Andreas walks on stage at the Graduation Ceremony for 10th grade at ISB yesterday, Monday, as a voluntary speaker for the Graduating Students. The hall is packed with family and friends, and Andreas’ Mother and Father sit in the midst, unaware of his role at the ceremony. He has already received awards at the Graduation Ceremony, the Bergen Municipality Award for his professionalism and innovative attitude, an endowment which we, the parents are extremely proud of and happy about. What follows is Andreas taking the stage, as if the unsecure boy was never there, speaking as a leader ...but more importantly; his self-chosen subject is The ISB value 'Kindness'.

If you made it so far in this LinkedIn post, I recommend you all to watch the video of 3:42 or something (and ignore my shaky video recording, I was emotional…) and hear this young man reflect on 'Kindness'; in school and education, relationships and self-development.

Andreas is my son and my hero. He has made a huge journey, through friendship, acceptance and tolerance of fellow students at ISB, and guidance of wonderful teachers there and a good educational system. But more than anything, this is Andreas’s hero journey, reflecting in the car; 'Mum, it hasn't come for free. It has been a lot of really hard work.'

We adults need being reminded of exactly this; that (personal) development is hard work and requires a lot of personal effort. And that in the right environment, we can blossom and become the best we can be. And that we all need to always be Kind.
