One of the toughest lessons I learned was to stop being offended by everything.

I was a sensitive kid, but I learned to hide my feelings as vulnerability wasn’t praised or rewarded.

Instead, I carried the hurt around and let it destroy me from the inside out until I finally realized something.

Being offended is a choice.

Yep, I said it!

A CHOICE!

I know you might not believe me, but the reality is that you can only control one thing as it relates to dealing with people.

What’s that one thing?

YOUR REACTION!

Your reaction to… ▶ People ▶ Politics ▶ Pettiness (Fill in the blank)

You can’t control what people do, but you can control how you respond.

Responding isn’t just about what you say or do in the moment.

It’s about how long you carry that moment around with you.

How much time you spend talking about it to others. How much time you spend worrying about what’s next.   How much time you spend replaying it over in your mind.

Stop letting other people or things control your emotions for longer than necessary.

Remember, it’s not about saying what they did is ok, it’s about minimizing the impact TO YOU as much as possible.

Meaning, getting on to letting go and healing so you can move forward.

Unburdened.

We can retraumatize ourselves by playing the incidents back on an endless loop.

Reclaim your peace.

#mondayswithmorenike #emotionalmaturity #movingforward

P.S. It’s not easy, but learning to protect your peace is one of the most important ways you can care for yourself.

P.P.S. Drop a comment with how you overcome being offended (quickly).

Participation trophies praise poor performances. Participation trophies praise mediocrity.

Participation trophies pretend the fantasy is real life. Participation trophies pretend that every player has won. Participation trophies pretend that everyone did a good job.

Feelings aren’t facts. Feelings aren’t the gold standard.

It’s ok to say…

…that wasn’t good.

There’s a great quote that I love from Jurassic Park that says “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should!” ~Dr. Malcolm, Jurassic Park

Can I physically breakdance?

Yes.

Can I do it well?

No.

Should I do it publicly or in a competition?

No to the 10th power.

My delusion should not be allowed to run rampant.   My delusion should not take away time and attention from those who have honed their craft.

We need to get back to telling folks no sometimes.  #mercedesfromglee

Self-awareness is key.

Having honest people around you is crucial.

We can’t see ourselves.

Check your surroundings and make sure you aren’t looking into a fun house mirror that has you seeing things UNCLEARLY (read: wrong).
