As we near the end of another year, it's natural to reflect on our professional journeys and consider our aspirations for the future. In this spirit, I want to share a powerful concept that has resonated deeply with me: 'Cover and Move' from my latest read "Extreme Ownership" by Jocko Willink. It's about supporting your team, empowering them to succeed, and leveraging their strengths/super powers to achieve shared goals. This realization solidified my understanding that while leaders are always striving to grow and scale their organizations, ultimately, our success hinges on the strength of each individual within the team. Even at scale, we are only as strong as our weakest link.

Summarizing three key learnings here -

  1. Support and Empower

Identify your strengths and weaknesses. What unique skills and knowledge can you offer your team? If you're a people manager, I highly encourage you to utilize this as a 2024 team bonding activity where your teams share and highlight their superpowers and strengths and establish each others as SMEs in their core domains. This will enable your teams to truly lean on each other, and count on each other as they navigate different/unique areas of their work.

  1. Continuous Improvement

Create a safe environment where individuals can learn from their mistakes and grow. Always debrief with your team to reflect on learnings and mechanisms that you can build now, that can be used and scaled in the future. When this becomes a recurring activity, it will become embedded into your team culture to 'Pause and reflect' and will enable your teams to have solution-oriented mindsets.

  1. Extreme Ownership

Leaders take full responsibility for everything, regardless of circumstance. This includes both successes and failures. If you are a leader, be sure to have a strong back-bone. Be sure to shield and protect your team. I know its a common belief that success and failures belong to the entire team and not one person, but in my humble opinion I believe that if you are a people/organization-leader, then successes are credit to your team, and failures are all on you. Sure we can learn as a team, but the responsibility is yours as a leader. The sooner we know this, the sooner we will leverage 'Extreme Ownership' to ensure our teams can thrive at work.

By applying "Cover and Move" with empathy, you can create a ripple effect of positive change. You'll build strong relationships, foster a supportive environment, and unlock the collective potential of your team. This not only propels your own career but also contributes to the growth and success of everyone around you.

Hope you manifest and work-hard towards a great new year. Happy 2024!
