Highlights
Calling Diaspora to return in their country of origin might not be the sole option to leverage this now-recognized driving force for development.
I have always been fascinated by India, mainly observing and researching on the dynamics the country had stratigically created with its diaspora while investing in higher education. In fact, when I was an MBA student at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford a large portion of my fellow students were from South Asia nationality. This trend is steady as students from South Asia account for 23% of the current MBA cohort. The smartest move is that not all of them were asked to return back in India. But all of them did want to strive wherever the domain or wherever they will geographically land and, from there, building bridges with India was seen as a success receipe. This phenomenon is even more observable in the IT industry.
I have always wondered when sub-Saharan Africa will apply this receipe. It seems like things are now moving in that direction.
Last month, I was privileged to be part of the dynamic discussions and collaborative endeavors at the 3rd EAC conference on Science Technology and Innovation in #Nairobi, where I was invited as research & innovation implementer at EPFL EssentialTech Centre and as member of East African diaspora. This event has seen visionary leaders from across the East African Community converged to ignite innovation and drive progress in the region.
I was thrilled that providing African Diaspora with the much needed opportunities to engage with their motherland was a passionate discussion during the conference. Building bridges and fostering partnerships and knowledge exchange for #sustainabledevelopment is a service that diaspora is keen to develop.
Let’s continue to leverage diaspora to harness the power of innovation to drive positive change in Africa and beyond!
